The actor was born on October 29, 1967 in Twickenham to his parents; Jo his mother and William Sewell his father. When he was only five years old, his parents divorced and he was left to grow up with his mother and brother. Sewell, who was originally interested in rock music, played drums in rock bands alongside his brother. When he was ten years old, his estranged father died.
Sewell revealed that he fell into depression and became involved in a series of juvenile exuberant illnesses that led him to prison. He attended Orleans Park School, which he later left to enroll in West Thames College.
His acting career began in 1986 after he auditioned for drama school and joined London’s Central School of Speech and Drama. After fully educating the school in 1989, he made his debut in the stage production Making It Better. His breakthrough came in 1993 with the film Dirty Weekend where he starred as Tim.
